History and design at Palazzo Merlo
Our apartment is located on the first floor of Palazzo Merlo, built in the late Middle Ages, on the walls of the ancient Arab citadelle, and it is a perfect mix of history and contemporary design. It is very quiet due to its thick ancient walls and its location in a small alley. The entrance gives way to a wonderful living and dining room, where the ancient Arabic stone wall, the wooden XVI century beams and a few beautiful Sicilian antique pieces are mixed with several Italian and international contemporary design furniture and lighting items. The contemporary design sofa of the living room doubles as a comfortable double bed. The main bedroom has a queen size bed, a wardrobe, a XVI century wooden coffered ceiling, and an independent balcony with a great view on the main facade of the San Francesco church. A contemporary design and fully equipped kitchen, is the perfect space to create gourmet seafood dishes to be eaten in the main dining room or even a simple Sicilian orange and fennel salad made with the great local ingredients you can buy in the Palermo street markets! The bathroom is entirely built with lava stone, steel and mirrors and sports a wide and comfortable shower. The entire house has free Wi-Fi, heating and air conditioning.
We also offer to our guests truly authentic experiences to live like a local. If interested, visit our website wonderfulitaly.eu or contact us and we will be more than happy to help you out designing an unforgettable holiday to discover Italian beauties.
Our apartment is located in the most prestigious district of the city, the Arab quarter of Kalsa. It is only 200 m from the seaside and close to the Gulf of Cala, Piazza Marina (with its centenary ficus trees), Palazzo Steri (former Court of the Inquisition) and Palermo's best night-life in Via dei Chiavettieri, Piazza Marina and Via Alloro. The apartment is 50m from the 14th century church of S. Francesco di Assisi together with the oratories of Immacolatella and San Lorenzo, decorated with 18th century stuccoes. Only 200m from the apartment is the museum complex of Palazzo Abatellis, which hosts the Regional Art Gallery containing important art works such as those by Antonello da Messina. Kalsa neighborhood is characterized by alleys and squares, noble monuments and churches, clashing in harmony and contradiction with local market stalls, with their colors, aromas and flavors, including some of the city's best street food, and finally the city cultural soul of museums and theaters. Finally, at walking distance from our apartment you can find several restaurants, and find yourself at ease both if you are looking for gourmet dining and for a typical local "trattoria".
