At the beach with the kids in Syracuse

Near the city

Near the city, there are coves, bays, and beaches with white sand. Particular care has been taken by tourist operators to accommodate families with children. The Fontane Bianche beach was defined by Sole 24 ore as a sort of Mediterranean Tropics. The resorts are open from the end of April to the start of autumn. A few kilometers from the city is the wonder Noto Gulf, Eloro beach, and then you can go down to the lowest point in Sicily, reaching the ancient fishing port of Marzamemi and Capo Passero.

Syracuse is full of parks and nature reserves. Things not to be missed are the guided tours through the Plemmirio Nature Reserve. Thanks to the transparent bottoms of the boats, you can see all the marine life, with thousands of fish of all colors. For an experience among the stalks and flamingos, visit the nearby Vendicari natural oasis, open all year round. For a journey through the carob, dwarf palm and olive trees can be completed by spending a day in the Cassibile Reserve. Syracuse also offers a touch of Egypt with its Fiume Ciane e Saline Reserve: it is the only place in the world, together with the River Nile, where papyrus grows naturally. There is also the Pantalica Reserve, with its wonderful necropolis on the Hyblaean Mountains, a small oasis of peace and uncontaminated nature, UNESCO heritage since 2005.

After the beach

Following suit in terms of culture and nature, there are Papyrus Museum and the Aquarium of Ortigia. For children, a visit to the Tecnoparco di Archimede, dedicated to the mathematician and inventor born right here in Syracuse, is a must. The park is a permanent exhibition to Archimedes’ inventions. During the visit, children will discover why ships float and how mirrors were used as weapons of war, thanks to guided tours and experiments based on Archimedes’ discoveries. In the heart of the Hyblaean Mountains, close to Buccheri, there is the Parcallario, an adventure park full of trees and plants.
