On a gulet in the Egadi islands of Favignana and Levanzo
“I was born in Sicily, and there, man is born as an island on the island.” - Luigi Pirandello
A day aboard a wooden gulet in the waters of the largest marine area in Europe: the Egadi Islands. We sail to the islands of Favignana and Levanzo, on a sea that has so many mythical stories to tell and an infinite beauty to discover.
Once sailed to Favignana, it is impossible to get tired of the scenarios that open up before the eyes. The famous and spectacular coves - Cala Rossa, Cala Azzurra, Bue Marino - the crystalline sea of the nature reserve, the mythical landscapes where Ulisse arrived, told in the Odyssey.
The name Cala Rossa, for example, is said to derive from a Punic naval battle: a bloody struggle, in which the Romans got the better of the Carthaginians. A battle that transformed the blue waters of the cove into blood red.
Anchored off the island, the captain offers passengers a lunch prepared by himself, based on typical Sicilian products: couscous and grilled fresh fish. In the end, we stop at the port, to visit the streets of the historic center of the island.
Leaving Favignana, a stop in Levanzo for another swim in the blue. Upon request, the crew provides all the equipment to do some snorkeling and discover the seabed of this little paradise. It is located at the extreme west of Sicily, which boasts of being the largest protected marine area in Europe.
Levanzo is the smallest of the Egadi archipelago, a white terrace overlooking the sea. A hundred inhabitants and no roads, primitive and wild, the island is a memory with a salty taste and blue hues.
Michele, the captain of the Turkish sailing ship Ariva II, is a man of water, born on Garda Lake. Passionate about freediving and underwater fishing, he sailed in Turkish boats, along the coasts kissed by the Mediterranean Sea and among the Greek islands. Fascinated by the typical Sicilian friendship, he finally chose as a destination the same as many navigators of the past: Trapani and the Egadi.
This wooden gulet is a great-grandson of the Amerigo Vespucci, a 26 meters long boat that makes you feel at home, With the crew, he waits for passengers at the port of Trapani with a welcome cocktail. The gulet has ample space (sundeck, corner bar) and can accommodate up to 30 people.
