GAM. The Gallery of Modern Art

Palermo

THE GAM

Since 2006, it has been based in Kalsa, the ancient city that today helps to make Palermo a multi-ethnic city.
The Gallery of Modern Art is one of the most modern and dynamic cultural institutions in the city. The Museum exhibits a permanent collection of more than two hundred paintings and sculptures that illustrate the history of figurative arts in Italy between the nineteenth and twentieth century.
The works were done by artists and sculptors of national importance, with a particular focus on Sicilian artists. Amongst the masterpieces on show there are great paintings by Giuseppe Sciuti, Francesco Lojacono, Antonio Leto, as well as references to the Art nouveau to Ettore De Maria Bergler, Giovanni Boldini and the spectacular season of the twentieth century, with authors like Campigli, Casorati, Sironi, Guttuso and Franz von Stuck.

Sant’Anna della Misericordia

One of the GAM’s strong points is without doubt its exhibition space, the monumental complex of Sant’Anna della Misericordia.
The Museum, in fact, is made up of two adjacent buildings: Palazzo Bonet, where you enter, and the former Franciscan convent, with its magnificent cloisters, surrounded by a colonnade, links the complex to the Baroque church dedicated to Saint Anna.
In total, the museum is over 1,300 square metres, and includes the permanent collection, a library, a historical archive room for temporary exhibitions and a beautiful café with a restoration.
