Santa Caterina d'Alessandria Church

Palermo

Adjacent to a Dominican monastery that dates back to 1310, Santa Caterina looks over Piazza Bellini, opposite the Santa Maria dell’Ammiraglio Church and the Church of San Cataldo, with one side facing Piazza Pretoria.

An example of late Renaissance art, it is typical of the counter-reform period, whilst the inside contrasts nineteenth century baroque and Rococo styles. On the church’s exterior, with arabesque ornaments in golden stucco, Filippo Randazzo painted the Glory of Santa Caterina. In addition, the frescos in the dome, carried out in 1751, include the Triumph of the Dominican Saints and the Allegories of the Continents, the work of Vito D’Anna.

The roof of the church can also be visited, allowing you to step into what used to be the cloisters, to observe the Dominican monastery from up above, as well as allowing you to admire the city from a rare, magical position.
