UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Apulia

Apulia is a region with a millennial history and culture, which absorbed the influence of the people that ruled over it. For this reason, you can find five UNESCO Heritage Sites in this region.

Castel del Monte, Andria

Castel del Monte is in the communes of Andria, in the province of Bari, and it is part of the World Heritage List since 1996. It was commissioned by Frederick II of Swabia in the XIII century and it's perfectly preserved nowadays. Castel del Monte is a beautiful example of medieval military architecture because it has octagonal towers and planning, which evokes a sense of mystery around the building.

Trulli of Alberobello

Alberobello, a town in the Itria Valley, is famous for the huge amount of Trulli it hosts. These buildings are very old, as they were built by ancient pastoral communities that lived in this area. In fact, they consist of cone-shaped houses made of drywall and the peculiar white color of the facades. In the Itria Valley, you can count more than 1500 Trulli houses.

Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo, Monte Sant'Angelo

The Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo is in the province of Foggia, in the town of Monte Sant'Angelo and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011. The site dates back to 490 ad and, when Apulia fell under the dominion of the Lombards in 650 ad, it became one of the most important places of worship in the West. It is a beautiful example of Apulian Romanesque architecture and an important religious site.

Umbra Forest, Gargano

In the Gargano National Park, there is the Umbra Forest, which stretches over more than 400 hectares, where you can find many plant and animal species. Among those, there are wolves, foxes, deers, and other wild animals, as well as native and migratory birds. Moreover, you will also find Zappino dello Scorzone, a 700-year-old Aleppo Pine.

Castel Fiorentino in Torremaggiore

In Torremaggiore, in the province of Foggia, you can find another UNESCO World Heritage Site, which entered the list in 2017. Castel Fiorentino was located in the homonymous commune, which was abandoned after the death of Frederick II of Swabia in 1250. It is an old city, whose archaeological ruins include an ancient Domus belonging to the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire.
