A journey through romantic Palermo cannot start anywhere other than there, with guided tours organised by social cooperatives and nature associations.
A bloody, fiery city, Palermo offers thousands of starting points for romantic couples. A new version of approaching the city, with its tale of impossible loves, has become a walk among love and culture thanks to the initiative by a group of young Palermitans who occasionally organise the Tour of Love, an evening journey through the districts and squares of Palermo.
Another stunning place struck by passion is Piazza Kalsa, the ancient Al Halisah (La Pura), an ancient fortress built during the Arab reign. There, tradition tells the tale of a grisly murder of passion that happened thousands of years ago.
A Palermitan girl seduced by a “moor” (the term used to describe ruler of darker skin) killed her lover after having discovered that he was married and had children. But the woman did not want to stray far from her lover, and cut his head off so she could keep him close forever.
The legend of the “moor’s head” was born from this; they are vases that depict – in exact proportions – the features of the heads of men and women decorated and coloured. Legends aside, a romantic stroll through the gardens and historic buildings of Kalsa must surely end at the Palermitan street food stands, with baskets full of “babbaluci”, the legendary pan-fried snails with oil, garlic and parsley, the perfect aphrodisiac touch for a romantic tour.
Nearby, you can visit the Galleria Abatellis, where works by Antonello da Messina, Van Dijk, Novelli and Gagini are put on display. It takes just a few minutes on foot from Kalsa to get to the Botanical Gardnes, a treasure trove of unmissable nature that you can walk through hand in hand.
The city offers a range of accommodation that is perfect for couples looking for tranquillity, from splendid hotels in the city centre to the more reserved B&Bs in the heart of Palermo or on the coast in Mondello or l’Addaura.
