The Pietro Doderlein museum is the most important zoological museum of Sicily. The museum has over 5000 examples of vertebrates and invertebrates, displayed according to evolutionary and genetic relationships. Most of the examples belong to species now extinct in Italy and Sicily, such as the sturgeon, the royal owl and the wolf, although you will also see species that have been successfully reintroduced such as the sultan chicken and the griffon. It is possible to see rare native species like the Sicilian rock partridge, protected species like the royal eagle or the Egyptian vulture, the loggerhead sea turtle and so on. It hosts one of the biggest Ichtyological collections of Europe: around 1200 species of fishes, all of whom have been stored thanks to a chemical treatment. The museum provides guided tours and interesting educational tours.
