The shape of the Amalfi Coast looks like a balcony suspended between the blue waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea... It is usually nicknamed "divine" and it stretches over a coast of 50 km overlooking the Gulf of Salerno: it's defined by Positano West, and by Vietri Sul Mare East. Exploring the Amalfi Coast means visiting the most famous islands in the Mediterranean Sea, a journey of bright cities and colorful houses, heights and terraces facing the sea with amazing beaches. It's surely one of the most fascinating coastlines in the world, where natural beauty merges with human work, shaping it and living in symbiosis.
Leaving for our itinerary of seven days, we start from Marina di Procida: from far away, when you can barely see the harbor of Marina Grande, you will be amazed by the collection of colorful houses. A rainbow of colors that welcomes every traveler on this small island, which is less touristic than the others, so extraordinarily authentic. That's the beauty of Procida: you can find it in fishermen, in the blue water, in the anchored boats of fishermen that just came home after a long day. "Amalfi, Positano, the Amalfi Coast are surely the most beautiful places you can visit in this area. But the real beauty is kept by the islands. Maurizio, station chief of Marina di Procida, knows this area very well and says "seeing Corricella from the sea is an explosion of colors". Sant'Angelo di Ischia is one of the most fascinating towns on the island of Ischia. It's an oasis of peace and tranquility, cars are not allowed in and, among the characteristic alleys and houses, it reflects the typical example of Mediterranean architecture.
Ancient fishing village, it is nowadays an elegant meeting place for elite tourism which often lands to the port with luxurious yachts. It is located at the foothills of the town of Serrara Fontana and it represents the gem of Ischia.
"Next we have Capri, the most beautiful of all islands. Mooring there at night and looking at Faraglioni is one of the most romantic experiences you'll ever have. Until the Pontine Islands, in Palmarola, which is my favorite and there's Cattedrale del Mare: an explosion of rock in the middle of nature, loneliness, and wind", Maurizio said.
Palmarola takes its name from the dwarf palms, which grow plentiful on the island. Nature is wild and unwelcoming. The island is a natural reserve and the water, full of fish, is the most beautiful in the area.
Caves, ravines, and bays decorate white cliffs. A particular zone is called Cattedrale, as it takes the name from the shape of the rocks located in a series of narrow caves in bluestone. Those caves carve the cliff as it was a Cathedral with vaults and pillars. The Cathedral caves can be also explored with masks and snorkels. You can swim in the darkness, which is made blue by the light filtered by the lair. An unforgettable experience. Maurizio says "the Cathedral is an explosion of beauty."
Among the other gems to visit in Palmarola by boat, you can find Grotta del Gatto, which hosts a source of freshwater inside, which is accessible with a small boat.
Galere, the cliffs, are speckled, black on ochre, obsidian, very pure black glass. A fun fact about Galere: primitive men that used to live in caves and shelter of the promontory of Circeo came here to stock up on obsidian. The one extracted in Palmarola was processed in Ponza and Zannone, where relics were found. It was then brought to Circeo. You have to visit the Chapel of San Silverio. You will find a path encaved in the rock.
"Sailing in these places is always spectacular because they are kissed by the wind and in the afternoon you can go quick thanks to the mistral.
Thanks to the big spaces, you can move very easily by boat from one village to another, while looking at a spectacular coastline. The experience of sailing on the Amalfi Coast is different in many ways from a trip by land. The beauty of sailing is that you can admire the harbors, the beaches, the small villages in Campania: all of this, with a unique point of view, as you don't have to walk among a big crowd of tourists. Onboard, cradled by waves, you will admire a beautiful landscape where there are big and small beaches, enchanting valleys, vineyards, and fields of citruses.
Experiencing a holiday on a sailing boat, a motorboat, or a catamaran means enjoying the best of the mainland without all the stressful situations of it. You won't have to deal with traffic and crowded beaches. When noise and chaos will be too much, you can always go back to your boat.
If you're already an expert in sailing and you already have a boating license you are free to moor on the coast and choose the option without skipper.
If you don't have a boating license, not only will a skipper guide you throughout your holiday, but they will also give more value to your trip as they will recommend you the best places to dive in the water, take pictures and relax. Having a skipper will also help you understand better the boat life, learning secrets concerning sails and knots, as well as fishing.
It depends on your needs and the ones of your crew. If you're looking for a comfortable and spacious boat, a catamaran is surely the best option. In fact, the catamaran, in comparison to sailing boats, has two hulls that make the whole boat more stable. The cabins are also bigger and there are more windows. On the other hand, if you're looking for a sportier experience but you still want to feel comfortable, a Dufour 460 is the ideal boat for you. It is a boat that keeps the stability and details of bigger vessels, combined with the agility of a sailing boat.
You can book it in just a few clicks on Sailogy, the leader platform where you can rent sailing boats, motorboats, catamarans and gulets. It is active in five continents, offering holiday solutions for the whole year.
