Catania

An agreement for the future

Enel and the Municipality of Catania have found an agreement for the installation of 48 charging stations for charging electric cars, scooters and quadricycles in the city, by the end of December.

Even Sicily has started to move in the right direction.

A Greener Sicily

Every charging station is equipped with two plugs and will offer two parking spots free of charge for charging vehicles.
The two parking spots will be subject to the same rules for loading and unloading vehicles, allowing them to use the spots  strictly for the time necessary.
Spots will be marked by yellow lines, the same currently used for reserved spots for disabled parking.
Will citizens be able to understand the need to identify crosswalks with white lines, the use of yellow lines to mark disabled and loading/unloading spots and, lastly, will they consider the reserved spots for electric charging necessary for urban life?

The zones

This is happening all over the world and the Local Administration bets that this worthy initiative can happen here, too.

For the time being, the charging stations are concentrated in the city center: from Castello Ursino to the end of Via Messina, going through Piazza Ariosto and the Castello di Leucatia.
But this gamble is important for everyone because these 48 “pumps” will make Catania the city with most charging stations in Sicily.

The Paris Agreement

The Paris Agreement on climate change came into effect on November 4th, 2016
(https://ec.europa.eu/clima/policies/international/negotiations/paris_it).
During the conference in Paris, in December 2015, 195 countries adopted the first universal, legally binding agreement on global climate.
The agreement defines a global action plan aimed at limiting CO2 emissions and getting the world on track to avoid dangerous climate change, limiting global warming under 2°C.

The main goal of the Paris Agreement is to have 600 million electric cars on the roads by the end of 2035.
The electric car market trend shows a fast growth.

The market of electric cars

If, on the one hand, the purchasing cost of electric cars decreases, becoming more accessible for a wider part of the population, it is necessary to make large investments for the transformation of the charging network infrastructure.
Thanks to the presence of Tesla and substantial incentives from the Government, there are 280 thousand electric cars in the United States, mainly in California.
However, the record belongs to China, where almost 600 thousand electric cars have been registered.

In 2017, there were 2 million electric cars circulating on the planet; of these, around 500,000 in Europe.
Norway, the most proactive in this regard, together with the Netherlands, has set an end date for the sale of diesel- and gas-engine cars sales by 2025; in Germany by 2030.
It comes with no surprise that Italy is at the bottom of the ranking and has extended the deadline until 2040.
In our country there are only 3,430 electric cars in circulation, out of a total of 37 million vehicles.

In Sicily, Palermo and now Catania are the two cities with the highest number of electric charging stations.
